One of today’s greatest challenges in conservation is the rapid decline of wildlife hunted for food or commercial use. Bushmeat is the term commonly used for meat of wild animals killed for subsistence or commercial purposes. Although commonly associated with African game, the issues of bush meat and sustainable use are a global problem that affects local communities.  Here in the United States , bushmeat includes our fisheries as well as our game industry.  Whether legally or illegally acquired, bushmeat is a growing concern among conservationists worldwide.  Focusing on socio-economic issues surrounding bushmeat, the workshop will center on identifying some of the common issues surrounding bushmeat usage across the globe.  With the assistance of a panel of subject-matter experts, workshop participants will develop ideas and tools that will help local communities make conservation-minded decisions with regards to sustainable meat usage.

The workshop will consist of a two-part session:

· short presentations from our subject matter experts on the issues of sustainable living and bushmeat · small group problem solving session using a fictitious animal or case in a fictitious area.  The goal will be to encourage participants to work together to identify both conservation and community issues and determine best-fit solutions for both animal and community.

Conservation-minded use of local resources is a growing concern in many areas around the world today.  As stewards and representatives of the wildlife that we care for, our role in bushmeat conservation is a relevant topic for today's zookeeper.
