I graduated from college in the spring of 2003 and was looking for an interesting summer job when I saw an advertisement for part-time work at the Saint Louis Zoo. Even though I studied political science in college, I had grown up spending my weekends on the farm where my parents kept their horses, and had always enjoyed taking care of animals. I applied for the position and before I knew it I was working in the children’s zoo caring for a variety of small mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. By the time the summer was over, I knew that I had found a career that I really loved and wanted to dedicate my time. Over the next two years, I gained experience, and joined the local chapter of AAZK, while trying to land a full time job. In February of 2005, I was offered a position working with ungulates, equids, and birds and quickly realized that this was the perfect blend of animals for me to work with. I have been lucky enough to work with these special animals for the past four years, and hopefully for many years to come.
