Kathy Brader, Senior Bird Keeper at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington DC . I have been here since 1986, always with the bird department. I have worked mostly with tropical birds, including toucans, hornbills, mousebirds, rollers and parrots. I have been involved with the Guam Bird Project since its inception both the Micronesian Kingfishers and the Guam Rails. I have worked with the Brown Kiwi for over 20 years. In the last five years I have been to New Zealand twice, both times to work with other zoos and Department of Conservation with studying kiwi and their programs. I have also attended the Kiwi Incubation Workshop, that is sponsored by the Kiwi Recovery Program. With the co-operation of the NZ kiwi studbook keepers and the Captive Kiwi Management Group and the support of the overseas Kiwi holders, I became the first Kiwi Studbook Keeper for all the kiwi outside of NZ, plus the Chairperson for the Kiwi SSP.
