Shaffstall, Wendy - Senior Ungulate Keeper Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Ohio , USA Wendy.Shaffstall@cincinnatizoo.org Since becoming a professional keeper 23 years ago, Wendy Shaffstall has been active in American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) in a variety of ways. She has submitted numerous articles to Animal Keeper’s Forum for publication, was one of the original members of the Animal Behavior Management Committee, contributed information to a variety of AAZK projects and has been the recipient of AAZK research and professional development grants. As you can imagine, she has experience with an assortment of species. She’s worked great apes, canids, felids, ursids and primates, but her favorite has always been working with hoofstock and rhinos. Wendy is excited to attend her 16 th AAZK National Conference and is eager to be able to share the results of a long-term artificial insemination research project involving the greater one-horned rhinoceros. This project was initiated by Dr. Monica Stoops who collaborated with a group of dedicated rhino keepers to apply their knowledge of operant conditioning practices and animal behavior expertise to enable her to utilize scientific principles and technology in order to enhance the reproductive efforts for this species.
