Carsten has been a Keeper at Frankfurt Zoo since 1980 and head keeper of the great apes since 1996.

He has been a board member of the German Zookeeper association Berufsverband der Zootierpfleger e.V. (BdZ) since 1993 and a Steering Committee member of the International Congress of Zookeepers (ICZ ) since 2000

Carsten developed a husbandry training program for great apes at Frankfurt Zoo. He also developed a training program for Bonobo foster mothers. Although the mothers care of the babies they will bring the babies to mesh, so keepers can do the bottle feeding.

Carsten has run several training courses and Keeper development courses in various European Zoos.

Among his publications are:

  • Various articles about training and enrichment
  • A brochure about enrichment in theory and practise.
  • A manual for enriching the lives of great apes in human care, this has been translated into a number of different languages

Carsten’s hobbies are reading, travelling, mountain biking and Aikido
